The Early Years

United Hospital Services is a company with a history of steady growth designed to meet the needs of an ever-changing healthcare market. The mission of UHS is to launder excellent quality linen for Indianapolis area hospitals while maintaining the highest standards in cost control, value engineering, delivery, and customer satisfaction. In 1964, UHS became a corporation and began to service the Indianapolis area.

Five hospitals founded UHS: Community East, St. Francis - Beech Grove, Wishard, IU Hospital, and St. Vincent Fall Creek UHS was originally located in downtown Indianapolis at the corner of Meridian and South Street. This location served the needs of UHS and it is customers for many years, but eventually production was exceeding the capacity at this location, and a plan for a new facility was developed.
The New Plant

With production capacity at the downtown location, reaching the limits of the facility and the design of a new plant began. This new state of the art plant would move UHS out of downtown and the restraints that a location in a large metropolitan area presented. The new location was to be at 9948 Park Davis Drive. This location, just off Mitthoffer Road allows for easy access to Interstate 70 and to Interstate 465. Located only a few minutes from downtown, but no longer under the restraints of downtown Indianapolis.

This new plant would utilize the latest technology in the laundry industry. UHS would utilize a system of four continuous batch washers (or tunnels) to wash the bulk of the laundry. These four tunnels allow for increases in production, while decreasing water consumption. The plant would also utilize an overhead rail system to transport laundry, both soiled and clean. There would be no need to push carts from area to area throughout the plant. The plant would also have the ability to soften the hard central Indiana water so that it could more efficiently and more effectively clean the linens. The new plant also has air coolers and air movers for the production area, allowing the plant and the employees to stay cooler in the summertime heat of Indiana.

While the production area was a focus in the building of the new plant, other aspects of the design received attention. The plant features a maintenance shop that allows for repairs of machines and other equipment. There is also a large warehouse area to house new linens to allow easy cycling into the linen supply. The new plant has locker rooms, plenty of parking, and a large air-conditioned cafeteria for the employees to use.

In 2003, UHS entered the mat and mop business and began supplying many of the hospitals in Indianapolis with these items. While the plant may have changed, the mission has not ...providing linens to the healthcare network of Central Indiana and beyond.

In 2005, UHS underwent a conversion to a for-profit LLC and is now capable of servicing the needs of both non-profit and for-profit hospitals and clinics of all sizes.
