United Hospital Services is home to a 116,000 square foot facility that has the ability to process over 50 million pounds of laundry a year and is among the largest cooperative laundries in the country. Just how much is a million pounds of laundry? It is quite a lot...and to put it into perspective if you were to wash one million pounds of laundry at home it would go something like this: Your washer and dryer would be quite busy, based on a 20 pound load it would take 50,000 loads to wash that much laundry. If your washer washed one load every 30 minutes, it would take you over two and a half years (1041 days) to wash a million pounds. You had better have lots of laundry detergent on hand, because you will need 1,563 bottles of detergent if your average bottle is good for 32 loads. You might want to budget enough for your water bill, because even if you had one of the most water efficient consumer washing machines, you would still be using 900,000 gallons of water. Hopefully you have plenty of space in your house, because if you washed just sheets and had them perfectly folded into a 12"x18" squares and stacked into piles over three and a half feet tall they would still take up more space than three NBA basketball court. If you folded a million pounds of sheets and stacked them on top of each other, they would form a stack of sheets that would be in the way of Boeing 747's flying across the country at 35,000 feet. If you were able to fold quickly and fold a single sheet every ten seconds, working around the clock, it would still take you over 115 days to fold that many. A million pounds of laundry is a lot of laundry and a lot of work, but UHS is up to the task. We have a dedicated workforce and specialized equipment that makes a millions of pounds of laundry more manageable. To see the calculations for this information click here. |
